Elizabeth "Bette" Boss
Jun 3, 2018On June 2, 2018 she passed peacefully to be joyfully welcomed by her son, Patrick Boss, her parents, Martin and Marie Coyle (nee Dunn), her sister, Mary Wunnicke (nee Coyle) her brother, Patrick Coyle, and her Irish immigrant grandparents, Elizabeth and Peter Dunn.Born at home in Bear Creek, Sauk County, May 8, 1926, her Irish parents proudly welcomed their “wee lass” and first child. Bette spent her childhood on Loreto Ridge, attending country school with her “Irish twin” sister, Mary. She graduated Spring Green High School in 1944. As a part of the war effort, she worked at Badger Ordinance, then moved to Madison to work for Farmers Mutual.It was in Madison where she cultivated two of her lifelong passions – dancing and meeting the love of her life, Rex Theodore Boss. Bette became a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Studios, where Rex and she caught each other’s eyes. Rex filled Bette’s dance card, they “tripped the light fantastic,” and tied the knot on December 4, 1948. After that, life’s adventures with 6 kids, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren ensued. Bette and Rex partnered through life’s joys and challenges for 69+ amazing years together.The restaurant business ended up being Bette’s third passion in life. With Rex as her partner, they owned Rex and Bette’s Truck Stop from 1951-1965 in Spring Green. Together, they co-owned and operated the Fire House Supper Club in Prairie du Sac from 1969 to 1993. Bette was known as the “hostess with the mostest” by her friends, family, and loyal customers. In 1983, they were awarded “Restaurateur of the Year” by the Madison Chapter of the Wisconson Restaurant Association. After the sale of the Fire House, Bette continued to enjoy the world of hospitality by hostessing at the Lake Wisconsin Country Club. She also served St. Vincent de Paul for a number of years.
